quick shots 7.30.09 | “Lebowski,” Twilight Brouhaha, AMPAS, IFP Chicago, Queer Cinema

July 31, 2009

Eddie Chung, a former philosophy student who is accustomed to pondering life’s deepest mysteries, is still stumped by something that shapes lives by the thousands: Why has “The Big Lebowski” become the most popular and all-consuming cult film since “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”? Scott Timberg reports in the LA Times.

The recasting of “Victoria” in the third installment of the “Twilight” franchise either demonstrates that Summit Entertainment is unreasonable or Rachelle Lefevere has “a lack of cooperative spirit.” Depending whom you ask, of course. Dana Harris takes a look at the ongoing he said, she said that’s been thrown around lately.

Edward Zwick has prevailed in the run-off for the open Directors Branch seat on the 2009-2010 Board of Governors, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Thursday.

100 guests came out in support of IFP/Chicago at a party hosted by LeeAnn Trotter, entertainment reporter at Chicago’s NBC 5. The party at Billy Dec’s Rockit Ranch Bar & Grill on Wednesday, July 22nd was presented to “increase awareness of the upcoming IFP/Chicago’s Independent Film Gala for September 25th, 2009 at the Wit Hotel.” For more information about IFC Chicago, visit their site.

In the past four or five years, there’s been something of an explosion of queerness on film—for better or worse—from the undercover “bromances” of Judd Apatow to the drag-pastiche of Todd Haynes to the overt politicization of Milk, to the ever-expanding circuit of gay exploitation knockoffs, including, as always, spoofs of mainstream popular culture and coming-of-age/coming-out narratives. And we mustn’t forget Brokeback’s multiple wins at the Academy Awards. A gay film isn’t necessarily ghettoized any more, but gay cinema is not exactly out of its niche market, either. Reverse Shot examines gay cinema and its relationship with the mainstream.

Independent mobile and web content platform Babelgum and Funny or Die unveiled an exclusive, wireless licensing agreement to bring Funny or Die videos to mobile platforms. The agreement will bring new and library Funny or Die content to mobile users everywhere over the next two years. Plans include offering mobile users a stand-alone Funny or Die-branded iPhone application, as well as including Funny or Die content in all current and future Babelgum applications.

It Might Get Loud” director Davis Guggenheim alsong with a slew of notables will be in East Hampton for a screening of the Sundance ‘09 film, hosted by the Hamptons International Film Festival. For more information on the screening and others in the Summer series, visit the festival’s website.

Screen Savour’s “T.S.” Poses Intriguing Question About Cinema For High Schoolers

July 31, 2009

T.S. of ‘Screen Savour’ who teaches in a University, is one of the net’s most gifted film writers, having penned comprehensive examinations of the work of Hitchcock, Chaplin, Griffith and Lang.  His series on Buster Keaton will soon debut at his site.  T.S. conversed with me earlier today about the kind of films that every high school student should see, and a tentative listing of maybe 15 or 20 ‘essential’ titles.  Said T.S.:  “I’ve been asked by a friend who is a high school teacher for some film-related advice. He is developing a media studies course for high school students, and it will be akin to an intro to film/film history course. He has presented me with this question, which I thought I would present to you:: What 15-to-20 films should the average American high school student see before graduation?

He’s made clear he’s not exactly looking for a list of 15-to-20 favorite films, and not necessarily the films I would select as the 15-to-20 best or most important of all time (although maybe, depending on your perspective, those would overlap in the suggestions.) He wants his course to give students a fairly comprehensive overview of cinema, offerings they might not catch unless otherwise asked to watch for a class — films from different decades, countries, genres, directors, etc. R-rated films are okay, and hopefully the choices will be available on either VHS, DVD, or streaming on the Internet (he can project all three in his classroom).
He and I both have some in mind, but to help us think outside the box, I’d love to hear your suggestions.”
Both Allan Fish and I put together our own lists of films that for various reasons, would be recommended for the average high school students.  Some are superlative adaptations of literature, while the others for artistic, social, psychological or ethnic underpinnings, all have a place.

The Return Of The Crazy Critic….

July 31, 2009
Believe it or not there was a time long, long ago when White really was a good critic, but those days are long gone. I’ve tried to figure out what the deal with him was and the only answer I could come up with, (and this may be a far fetched notion at best), is that White is racked with a self conscious fear about being a black film critic.

Granted there aren’t many of us around. Film criticism, is basically a white (yes, nerdy) thing. I go to film screenings all the time and there’s only me and, by the way, only one woman critic. And all the years I’ve been doing it there’s been only me. And usually the few black film critics that are around like that cheezing grinning “quote whore” Shawn Edwards who’s never seen a film he didn’t like (especially a black one no matter how awful)and whose knowledge of films doesn’t extend beyond The Empire Strike Back just to see his quote in the ads for the film.

White is desparate to show that just because he’s black no film, especilly a black film, gets a pass from him and that he’s worthy to be sitting in a screening room filled with white critics. He’s so deperate in fact that he goes towards the other extreme. If everyone loves a film he hates it, because, you see, he wants to show that even though he’s black he’s intellectually superior to everyone else. If all critics hate the film he’ll defend it, like he does with Tyler Perry movies, because everyone else is too stupid to see the brillance of his films that only someone of his superior intellect can see.

And of course it goes without saying that White ain’t getting any pussy and probably hasn’t in a very very very very long time. I mean ladies…would YOU want to deal with him?

But, despite being long winded, let’s go the the earlier point I made. Where are the female and black film critics? And I mean the serious, knowledgable ones not cooning “quote whores” like Edwards? In regards to women I agree with what Camille Pagula said when she was asked once why aren’t any great female classical music composers. She said for the same reason why there aren’t many female serial killers. The reason is because in order to be really good at something you have to be OBSESSED about it like how serial killers are obsessed about killing. It has to completely take over your life. We get obsessed over things. It’s our nature. We get obessesed about sports, guns, cars, porn (OOPS…sorry I was thinking about ME) Women don’t get obsessed about things like men do, unless as Pagula says, it about marriage and kids. To be a good serious film critic you need to be obsessed about movies. Every time I’m in the screening room and talking to the other critcs beofre the film begins we talk about movies. Not just what came out last week but MOVIES, from every period of every genre. We talk can about some of the most obscure movies you’re never heard of made 60 or 70 years ago. Why? Because were obsessed insane about movies and we’ve seen them ALL.

As for the lack of black film critics. it can’t be the lack of obssession. Men, black or white, gets obsessed about all kinds of things. But I really do believe it because seriously dealing with movies as an art form and not just as entertainment is seen as a “white nerdy” thing. And to go even father (HERE IT COMES…) any sort of intellectual persuit as seen as a exclusively “white nerdy” thing. I have always held the belief that deep down inside most black people believe that they’re not as smart as white people. The scret deep down self hating feeling of inferiority. That, for example, learning about movies, it’s history, it’s shifts in development etc., is too complicated for us to understand. So therefore no black film critics

WHEW! That’s it. I’m sure I’ve said enough for 500 angry responses ready to kick my ass for what I’ve just said.

Cinema of Fear Series 4 Now Available at Toys R Us!

July 31, 2009

I had heard a few weeks back that Toys R Us was gonna be stocking series 4 of Mezco’s Cinema of Fear series, but I was nonetheless still shocked when I walked into the local Toys R Us in my area and actually saw them sitting there on the shelf! In the past i’ve always had to wait for conventions or hit up specialty stores or the internet to pick up action figures like these, but it looks like they’re finally becoming more mainstream and I couldn’t be happier. Needless to say, being able to waltze into Toys R Us and see an action figure of ‘Roach Girl’ from Dream Master perched on the shelf just about made my year. I picked up afformentioned Roach Girl but before we get into her, lets take a quick look at the other two figures in the Cinema of Fear series 4 line.

We’ve got Jason Voorhees from Friday Part 3, complete with axe, machete, severed arm, and an alternate head :
